Jill Campbell

“Jill Campbell creates bewitching and responsive paintings that articulate aspects of the North Pennines, where she lives. One can at once see an intention to distance from reality and to ground the works within a definite landscape, as exemplified by the titles of her recent paintings. These works are not entirely abstract, drawing us into contemplation of individual areas of the canvases – celebrations of the natural world and the possibilities of a painterly world simultaneously.”Yorkshire Art Journal, 9 August 2014

Jill graduated from the University of Sunderland with a first class degree in fine art and has since exhibited throughout the UK, including the Royal Academy Summer Show, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Prize Exhibition, the Ferens Open and the New Light Art Prize Exhibition.

She is inspired by the landscape of the North East where she lives. Most of her work is based on an ancient mining landscape called Cockfield Fell where she regularly walks. She uses elements of what she sees and combines these with her imagination to create her paintings. She is fascinated by the Fell’s strange, other-worldly atmosphere with its abstract shapes defined by the morning shadows framed by big dramatic skies. Its pools, pathways, mounds, dips and curves are her motifs. She sketches and takes photographs then, in her studio, decides which shapes and colours to play with, drawing and applying layers of paint until she finds a balance and a painterly world emerges which celebrates this landscape.
