Jane creates contemporary still life paintings and landscapes from her studio in the East Midlands. She likes to travel widely and sketch on location, experimenting with drawing and painting using mixed media in response to the landscape, the coast and architecture. The places she visits often feature in her still life paintings combining table top arrangements of objects with a view through a window. A tradition she admires in the work of Winifred Nicholson, Mary Fedden and Henri Matisse.

Her paintings of flowers and objects include views of St Ives, Padstow, Edinburgh castle, Brighton pier, Venetian canals, Greek bays and the Scottish and Cornish coast. She has a fascination with remote islands and is particularly drawn to the Outer Hebrides and the Greek Cycladic islands.

Flowers are often the focus of her paintings. Her handling of media, sensitivity to colour and composition are partly influenced by her textile design education. She combines drawn linear details with painted blocks of colour building layers of detail and interest to create decorative and colourful paintings.

In the studio she works on paper referencing sketchbooks, photographs and memory; using a range of media including gouache, coloured pencils, inks, watercolours and acrylic.

She graduated from Manchester Polytechnic thirty years ago with a BA [Hons] in Printed Textiles and she worked as a freelance textile designer producing collections of furnishings and giftware. In addition over the last 30 years Jane has worked as a full time and part-time university lecturer.
