Fred Lawson, Yorkshire Landscape Artist
Frederick (Fred) Lawson (1888-1968) was born in Yeadon, near Leeds and studied at Leeds College of Art, from where he was awarded a scholarship to Kensington College of Art (now the Royal College of Art). His love of the Yorkshire Dales began with a trip there in 1910. Subsequently he lived in Castle Bolton and remained in the Dales until his death in 1968. Fred Lawson wrote for the ‘Ripon Wakeman’ (1949-1958) and ‘The Dalesman’ (1958-1968). For the latter he wrote and illustrated the monthly ‘A Letter from the Dales’. His wife, Muriel Metcalfe, and daughter, Sonia Lawson, both became respected artists.
