Rowland Suddaby (1912-1972) was born in Kimberworth near Rotherham, Yorkshire. He trained at the Sheffield College of Art from 1926 before moving to London, where his work attracted much attention in the 1930s. After the outbreak of war Suddaby moved with his family to Sudbury in Suffolk. East Anglia would be forever associated with his distinctive landscape paintings and drawings featuring back waters of ponds, fields, fences and gates. His work, predominantly art on paper, moved towards abstraction in the 1960s. His work is included in many collections including the V&A and the Government Art Collection.
