Attributed to Henry Gastineau, this watercolour of West Tanfield at eventide, shows the church and the Marmion Tower, a 15th century gatehouse to a now lost manor house, on the banks of the River Ure.

    Product Description

    This watercolour is inscribed on the verso ‘Tanfield, Yorkshire/Henry Gastineau’. A larger watercolour of West Tanfield, viewed in the opposite direction in the morning, by Henry Gastineau, with very similar style and colouring , sold at Bonhams in November 1998. Henry Gastineau (1791 – 1876) was born in London, of Huguenot descent. Having studied at the Royal Academy he eventually worked almost exclusively in watercolour on topographical scenes. He became a member of the Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1818. He was a contemporary of David Cox and Samuel Prout, who continued exhibiting paintings into his 80s.
