EXHIBITION

Private View: 27th September 2024 6:00 pm

The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours is proud to invite you to our first-ever group exhibition in Yorkshire and the North of England as guests of Watermark Gallery, in the beautiful spa town of Harrogate.

The beginnings of the RI can be traced back to the formation of the ‘New Society of Painters in Water Colours’ in 1807. This new society had a fascinating and sometimes turbulent period, sadly having to close in 1812, but re-emerging in 1831 from when it thrived. In the mid 19th century it was at the forefront of the movement to get recognition for watercolour as a serious medium for painting. The success of the Society’s endeavours were marked in 1831 when it received the prefix ‘Royal’ by command of Queen Victoria.

With a huge array of prominent artists as members and exhibitors, the RI has continued to promote its ethos and traditions throughout the 20th century up to the present day, and is proud to have His Royal Highness King Charles III as our Patron as well as our Honorary Member.

The exhibition will feature a wide range of paintings by some thirty RI members in watercolour and water-based media and we very much hope that you will visit this autumn.
